Atmosferas was created following an invitation from Jardins Abertos to take part in a festival combining architecture and performance art.

efei(to de es)tufa project proposes an interdisciplinary programme where architecture, art, and Lisbon’s natural landscape converge in a collective reflection on today’s environmental challenges and the imagination of new, sustainable models for shared living in the future.

Installed in the open field of the garden at Palácio Pimenta, Museum of Lisbon, Atmosferas establishes a dialogue with the neighbouring glass greenhouse. Similar in scale and geometry, it stands as its opposite: an exposed and visible structure supporting an open, seemingly purposeless surface. In contrast, the greenhouse encloses a volume of air, confined by glazed planes supported by a metal frame, and warmed by a system of radiators.

In the greenhouse, the layering of these elements simulates an atmosphere distinct from that of Lisbon at the time of its construction, creating conditions of high temperature and humidity. The surface that once separated these two atmospheres, the internal, distant one and the external, local one, fulfilled its role: translucent to solar radiation, yet impermeable to the flow of air and water.

Positioned opposite the greenhouse, the installation does not simulate a distant climate but reveals the atmosphere that currently defines Lisbon. In response to increasingly uninhabitable conditions, its open surface highlights the architectural urgency of interior climate control.

Unlike the greenhouse, which encloses and conditions an artificial environment, the installation frames an open space where the real, external atmosphere is directly experienced. Acting like a meteorological station, it draws attention to phenomena such as urban heat islands and changing weather patterns.

Ultimately, it reminds us of the inescapable reality of our existence within a thin, vulnerable layer of Earth's atmosphere, the one we inhabit here and now.
